Public holiday & weekend surcharges, are you being slugged?

Not all consumers are aware of this but in May 2009 the practise of charging a surcharge on top of the listed menu prices was ruled as illegal and the Trade Practices Act was updated to reflect this ruling.

Over 12 months on from this it appears that many restaurants are ignoring this and slugging their customers a surcharge on average around 10% but sometimes as high as 20% of the total bill. A recent piece in the Sydney Morning Herald found that just under 50% of venues are still behaving this way.

If you’re a regular at any of the three Garfish Restaurants in Sydney you’d have noticed that we have not had a surcharge on weekends or public holiday since this ruling was released. You can be sure that the listed prices are exactly what you’ll be charged and nothing more.
