Good news! Summer is almost here and uni is wrapping up. If you’re in the market for a job to earn you some extra money during your time off, hospitality work is often a great solution.
Perhaps you haven’t considered applying to Garfish? We’re pleased to say that we’re always looking for mature, well-presented students to become part of our team during our busiest time of year.
Kaija Scanlan, a second year Business Administration major, is a perfect example of what we’re looking for, and has been with Crows Nest Garfish since November 2010.
Kaija explains, “I started out behind the bar, polishing cutlery and glasses and just getting a feel for the restaurant. With the manager’s help, I was trained up on the floor and by the end of my first summer was responsible for my own section as a member of the waitstaff.”
She states that working as part of the Garfish team has been a really positive experience. “It’s a very caring, fostering environment and the more experienced staff are very patient and thorough.
“Best of all, it’s allowed me to build my people skills and develop more confidence. The impact it has had on my communication skills has definitely helped me in my degree.”
When asked whether working in hospitality is what she expected, she pauses before answering. “It’s different to what I expected. People assume you just serve customers and that’s it. It’s a lot more than that. There’s a lot of processes to become familiar with and a lot of work to be done behind the scenes and in between serving customers.”
Two years on, Kaija has stayed on as part of our Crows Nest team and finds it fits in well with her university commitments. “I usually attend about three days of classes, so I can work on my days off and night shifts are a great opportunity to earn some extra money,” she comments.
If you think you might be suited to a position at Garfish Restaurants, we’d love to hear from you. Ideally applicants should have hospitality experience, however for the right applicants we are willing to train those who demonstrate an aptitude for the hospitality industry and a committed desire to learn.
